***IMPORTANT*** New 2018 Bat Standards for Bedford Little League

Testing and evaluating of youth baseball bats has evolved into a science. So much so that the standard has also evolved to where USA Baseball, the national governing body for the sport of baseball in the United States, is adopting a new method for measuring bat performance in the testing of youth bats that will go into effect on January 1, 2018. The new USA Baseball bat standard (USABat), was developed by a USA Baseball committee of scientific experts.

Effective on January 1, 2018, Little League Baseball® will adhere to the new USABat standard. No bats previously approved for use in Little League Play (Junior League Baseball and below) will be permitted to be used in any Little League game or practice, or other Little League function, event, or activity. For more information on the USABat standard and a complete list of bats approved through the USABat Standard, visit usabat.com.

What this means for local Little Leagues, and Little League baseball players in the Tee Ball through Junior League Divisions, as well as Little League Challenger Division®, is that all current Little League-approved bats can be used during the 2017 Little League regular season and throughout tournament play, but can no longer be used starting in 2018. All of Little League’s current bat regulations will remain in effect until December 31, 2017. Be aware that this new bat standard effects Little League Baseball only. There are no changes to the bat standard or regulations for Little League Softball®.

Opening Statements From Our New President

Bedford Little League Community,

My name is Joe Riccio, I will be serving as President of Bedford Little league for the 2018 Season. It has been my pleasure to be involved in Bedford Little League for several years as a parent, coach and Board Member. Bedford Little League offers youth baseball players from T-Ball to 12-year-old Majors the opportunities to learn, play and enjoy the game of baseball.

Bedford little League has experienced great success on and off the playing field. Over the years, our players have represented the town of Bedford and the State of NH with exceptional ability and sportsmanship. This tradition continues with the support of players, parents and volunteers. Throughout the next several months the BLL Board of Directors will be working towards several improvements to our Player Development Programs, Facilities and Communications/Social Media.

As a recreational baseball league our goal is to provide a safe, enjoyable atmosphere where all kids can learn to play baseball, develop their skills and build long lasting relationships. Many of our players are involved in travel teams which train and play all year. Others, play baseball as a seasonal sport and have other interests during the off season. In all cases, Bedford Little League is here to serve our young players and help them build lifelong skills in team work, sportsmanship and physical fitness.

BLL will continue to support our Challenger Division which enables Boys and Girls with physical and mental challenges to enjoy the game of baseball. As in the past, we encourage the use of "buddies" for the Challenger players. The buddies, 11 /12 Majors players assist and encourage the Challenger players on the field.

One major change in Little League for 2018 is the new bat regulations. As of January 1, 2018 new Bat Regulations will be in effect. All bats will require the following USA Baseball markings:

Please be aware, most baseball bats purchased and used prior to September 2017 do not meet the new requirements. For more information, please check out the following link to Little League website http://www.littleleague.org/learn/equipment/baseballbatinfo.htm

Through sponsorships and fundraising, Bedford Little League continues to provide a valuable experience for our players with well-maintained facilities, development programs and quality baseball equipment. I would like to thank our sponsors for their continued support of Bedford Little League and encourage our baseball community to support them in return. The 2017 Mini-Cooper raffle was a great success and the funds raised are crucial to maintaining and improving our baseball facilities. I encourage everyone to participate when they can to keep fundraising interesting and fun!

Even though we are going into the baseball offseason, BLL is looking forward as we begin to prepare for the 2018 season. With additional Player Development opportunities, Field and Facility improvements and new Baseball Bats; 2018 should be a very exciting year for Bedford Little League!

Joe Riccio
